Our research reports serve two objectives:

  • to inform and raise people's awareness of existing situations in which economic, social and cultural rights are not respected, protected or fulfilled;
  • to formulate recommendations and alternative solutions with a view to changing the economic, social and political context which, in turn, should ensure that economic, social and cultural rights are adequately respected, protected and fulfilled.

If you have any comments with regard to the publications, please feel free to share them with us at info@socialalert.org.

New study on the informal economy PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 September 2004
Day after day, the rights of millions of informal workers are violated with impunity worldwide. As an international coalition for the defense and promotion of economic, social and cultural rights worldwide, Social Alert is committed to the defense of the fundamental rights of these people, which have been excluded from today’s international agenda.

Social Alert works in order to ensure that informal workers are considered as subjects of rights and are protected by the national and international instruments in force (such as ILO Conventions and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights).

Social Alert has just published a study on the informal economy in the series on "Studies on the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights". The publication deals with the gradual evolution of the informal economy in the world, with a view to promoting a better understanding of the current situation facing informal workers both in industrialised and developing countries. The document also tries to highlight the importance of the informal economy within a world ruled by globalisation, to prove that there is a strong link between the informal economy and poverty,and finally to deal with this issue from a human rights perspective. Only by deeply understanding the phenomenon and the actors involved, will the international community be able to devise an
effective strategy to fight against the infringement of human rights, including the rights of workers. This strategy must first and foremost foster the right of everyone to decent work, as defined by the ILO.
